Biofeedback

Surface electromyography (EMG) is an electrophysiological modality that measure skeletal muscular activity at the skin level. It is a non-invasive, physiological method which is very much like the electrocardiogram (EKG). In using surface EMG, sensors are placed on the surface of the skin and are used to detect the low amplitude changes in electrical potential that occur with the activation of muscle tissue.
.
Surface EMG is specially suited for assessing the activity of whole muscle groups and in studying the functional relationships among muscle groups. It may be utilized for investigational purposes in conditions of postural disorders, myofascial syndromes, somatic dysfunctions, muscle spasm, muscular injury and disease, and psychophysiological states. It may also be utilized in the treatment of these pathologies as a biofeedback modality. My main focus for most of my clients regarding biofeedback, deals with working on their muscular pain.
.
With the use of relaxation techniques and this biofeedback modality, it is my intention to help guide the individual into a deeper awareness of their muscular functioning and how it is related to their complaint.
.
Limitations of surface EMG is that it can not measure deep muscle groups, except when contractions from these groups are strong.
.
The Clinical Series instrument which I use is from NeuroDyne Medical, Corporation. The clinical Series has earned a pre-eminent reputation for instrument quality, and established the standard for clinical utility.
.
M44 Dual EMG has all the features and accuracy of a true dual channel version. Features a dry sensor for muscle scanning, highly flexible feedback, and real digital integration built in. As you may know muscles almost always work in pairs, and this clinical series can monitor agnoist/antagonist, and bilateral muscle sites.
.
The use of this machine is a non-invasive measurement of physiological activity.

TMJ

Treatment Options for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

Clinical hypnosis can help you with conscious and subconscious behaviors. As dentists tell us, TMJ could be a magnification of stress or a misalignment of the jaws. Under clinical hypnosis and biofeedback, the body learns to recognize when the jaw muscles feel tight, or when the teeth are grinding. Upon the recognition of these behaviors, you will learn how to replace muscle contraction with relaxation responses. When you have mastered these techniques you will release the tension, discomfort, or pain; and perhaps will no longer suffer from TMJ symptoms.
Hypnotherapy with biofeedback utilizes two types of pain control techniques for dental procedures, surgical operations, and birthing. Many people have gained control over chronic pain that did not respond to any other traditional methods.  Although you are not unconscious, you may have certain areas of memory lapse. The experience is similar to driving a familiar route – only to realize later that we don’t remember doing it.
